About Our Youth on the Move!

The beginning of our new Sunday school year is fast approaching! Most Sundays, September through May, our 6th grade through High School age students meet and share their thoughts on “what’s been happening” throughout the week. Everything from sports to tests to “hey I tripped in the hall” are up for discussion. We start and conclude each meeting with student led prayer. We use games, objects, or whatever it takes to reinforce the Scriptures. During the summer we are known to travel on High Adventure Trips...

In 2009 we flew to New York for summer camp. This was the first out of state camping experience on a beautiful 49 acre island situated in Schroon Lake in upstate New York. The kids participated in swimming, sports, paint ball, meeting new friends, and ended each day with praise music and skits.

In 2010 Colorado was the camp of choice. The kids decided to go 'primitive' as we entered the wilderness for mountain climbing, rappelling, tunneling, kayaking, and white water rafting. Bible study is never the same after you have studied the Scriptures on the top of a mountain!

In 2011 flights were too expensive. The kids collectively made the choice to experience camp at the Green Lake Conference Center in Wisconsin. During our daily sharing time the youth expressed that the best part of their day was worship time! Although, human foosball came in a close second! You have to see it to believe it!

We are now dreaming of next years trip. Plans for the 2012 summer camp are in the works. The cost of flights will determine where we go but it is sure to be an adventure they will talk about for years. However, in the meantime we have a host of activities. 2011 brings the AppologetiX Rock n' Roll concert for both teens and adults, the Halloween Haunted House, the Christmas puppet performance, and a 'Winter Blast' trip back to Green Lake Wisconsin.

One of our core ministries is the puppet team. A few key times each year the kids manipulate 15-20 inch professional grade puppets to make them dance and talk in order to share the Gospel message. One of our puppets takes two kids to manipulate! Each year, in February, the group attends a 2-day puppet convention in Tinley Park. The convention is a vital part of this ministry because we come home with lots of new ideas and skills.

During our slow times we have carpet ball tournaments with homemade cookies on the side, 'Win-it-in-a-Minute' challenges, and we even attempted to make communion bread for Easter. That recipe MUST be changed! Ugh!

We are fortunate to have kids willing to work hard to be able to afford these types of activities. Metal scrapping has been one of our main fundraisers along with an annual Fay’s Bar-B-Que drive-thru dinner in April. The Mission board allows us to have a cookie bazaar along with their Spaghetti Supper. After all everyone enjoys a homemade cookie!
