About the Church
Membership as per the Bylaws of Shabbona Church

Qualifications for Membership
Membership is open to any person who confesses faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and accepts the spirit expressed in the covenant and statement of faith. Admission is based upon:
  • Confession of Faith and Baptism;
  • Confirmation of Baptismal vows;
  • Presentation of Letters of Transfer from other Christian Churches; OR
  • Reaffirmation of Faith (for those unable to obtain a letter of transfer or who wish to renew their relationship to the church after a period of inactivity).
Admission to Membership
All applications will be reviewed by the Diaconate and upon approval by that Board as fulfilling the above qualifications, will be received as members in a public worship service. However, for reasons of disability or other good cause, an approved applicant may be received by the Pastor, assisted by a member of the Diaconate, at some other time or place.

Responsibilities and Commitments of Members
Members should regularly attend worship services and the celebration of the Lord’s Supper. Members are also encouraged to pray for and share in the life and work of the church; contribute to its support and benevolences as are able; seek the spiritual welfare of the church and the community; and live as Christ-like as possible. Members so doing shall be considered members.

Withdrawal of Membership
Withdrawal of membership is done as follows:
  • Any member in good standing may request a letter of transfer to another church. Upon receipt of the request from that church on behalf of the transferring member and upon approval by the Diaconate, the Pastor or Clerk will send a letter of transfer.
  • Members who move to a new community are encouraged to unite with a church in that community and remain active members of the Church of Jesus Christ.
  • If a member requests in writing to be released from his/her responsibilities, the Pastor and the Moderator shall endeavor to explore the request and seek a resolution. Failing in such effort, the request will be granted.
If a member wishes to unite with a church which does not accept a letter of transfer, the member may leave this church with a letter of church membership withdrawal.

Record of Status
All actions by the Diaconate regarding status of members shall be recorded in the minutes of its meetings and a copy thereof furnished to the Clerk of the Church.

Voting Privilege
Voting privilege shall be given to all members of the church.
